What are some good brands for Speakers, Head Units?
Is there anything i need to know before i buy anything?
Can i do the install myself or should i take it to someone?

Any help would be great, thanks.

It depends on what you want! Let us know what your thinking of?
Do you listen to rock or hip hop? Are you looking for a mad show car install or just one that goes hard without being incredibly flash.
Yea i'd do it myself, i do mine, i wasnt planning on it but i got quotes for my installs of around $400, so i just did it myself and saved $$$ i even made my custom subbox so i didnt fork out $$$ for that too.

I don't want anything incredibly flashy.. i would like to EVENTUALLY make a show car but i don't know what the scene is like for a 5dr hatch.. and i don;t know of any cruises or shows around my area.. I listen to Hip-hop, Rock and Metal, that probably doesnt help considering how different they are..

i was thinking id make a boot install myself.. but i dont know what id need or anything else really.. i have ideas but id need someone here that knows what they are talking about and doing..

iv been wanting to get a apprenticeship in the sound system area but i don't believe there's a great deal around my area..

Ok well since you listen to hip hop you will want a couple of subs, they will also help the rock and metal sound awesome too. In my opinion Pioneer make some great headunits, all compatible with Ipods and they come in single and double din.

With the boot install just make sure you measure up properly and make HEAPS of designs on paper, then just use mdf or fibreglass to make it, but make sure to sound proof it, otherwise your subs will space out and sound like shit, if your using mdf just use silicone on all your joints!

iv drawn up some basic designs of what i want for the boot install while keeping the ability to access the spare tire and have boot space to spare.. (sucks having a hatchback).. subs shouldnt take up too much space.. ill have to look.. ill probably just use MDF to make the boxes, its easier i think..

will silicone in the joints sound proof it?

i was thinking id get a Pioneer or Alpine headunit.. expensive but id rather go with a brand i know rather then one i dont..

my basic plan (without showing my crappy drawing) was 2 subs in the back.. 2 door speakers in the backseat doors.. 2 more speakers in the front doors.. see about getting a dash made up with all new dials.. ill have to get a friend to draw it up for me and ill post it up here somewhere

Ok yea sounds like a plan, what car do you have? Yea i agree with Pioneer or Alpine i think they are the two best brands for headunits they are really easy to use and have great tuning functions.
You use the silicone to make sure no air is escaping because you want all air to escape through the actual sub itself to get the best sound quality, what you do is woodglue your mdf together then nail/screw it aswell and then layer all the insides (and outsides if you want) to seal all holes and because silicone is flexible even if there are small gaps underneath the silicone it wont rip and open up!
To sound proof it people will tell you to buy acousti-foam and other stuff like that, but shaggy fabric from spotlight does the exact same thing. Because sound deadening is done by making sure there are no smooth surfaces for the sound waves to bounce off, which gives a distorted sound, so the carpet is cheap and very effective, thats what i used.

Hope all this info helps!

Woops nah i meant layer it with silicone, just all the joints, along the lengths of all the joints of wood etc.

Personally i like pioneer, they have a good menu system really clean button free faces and there tuning controls are great and you can switch your rca outputs between rears and sub settings. Alpine is a bit more up market, they usually have heaps fancy led screens etc, they have pretty good controls etc, there almost the same as the ipod controls but must have a huge centre button thing (which I think is ugly as hell lol) and alot of the time there pretty expensive compared to the pioneer with similar features.

Also, does your car have an alarm? and since its a relatively small car one sub will probably do, my old car (up until about a month ago) was a Diahatsu Cuore a 3door tiny thing around the same as a Barina and it was fitted out with all pioneer etc, you dont need to go overboard with such small cars, but that setup of one in each door etc sounds good. but yea make sure you have an alarm before you fit out your system, coz i thought it wasnt worth it and then my whole system got stolen out of my cuore and i had to replace the whole thing!

nah it doesnt have an alarm.. ALTHOUGH if u put the key in the ignition with the door open, it beeps loudly n annoys the fuck out of you haha.. god i hate that.. will have to get a alarm installed..

i need to get a tacho put in to help with the revs aswell (helps me know wen i need to shift so im not over revving it n burning fuel, which i got a mighty good wiff of today).. friend told me i could do it myself n save the $100 installation cost id just need to find out where i need to connect it to the engine or something like that..

Listen do you have msn or yahoo or anything like that, that we could chat on.. you seem to know alot bout this sort of thing is all.. if ya do pm it to me
