Well, I caved in and bought issue 180...never again!

I hadn't bought an issue of Hot4s since issue 119 (Though i did buy 150 just for sentimental value...I guess?).

Now I've just bought issue 180 because I thought 'I used to like the mag'. 'A change is as good as a holiday' or so they say...I've just had the holiday from hell.

Come with me as we journey through issue 180 through my eyes.

I thought I'd picked up the wrong mag when I opened straight to page 52 where I'm greeted by 4 half naked men. Tongue

Can I ask what is the point of 'Zena'? Is she another mystic Rima or whatever she was called, where people would write in stupid questions only to receive stupid answers in a space in the magazine where everyone could be learning about anything technical.

If Zena is so smart (she can answer anything apparently, 'Zena will know what to do'), why is she writing for Hot4s and not on 'Are you smarter than a fith grader'? Is she even answering the emails or is someone in the Hot4s office answering them?

Do Hot4s ever receive letters/emails saying "enough with the tech articles, they are taking up 'skank space'"? On the forums and through word of mouth all I seem to hear is 'more tech articles'. The only tech article I noticed was the working out at the gym one.

On a positive, even though JDM is the new black, I really like the baby blue V35. It's mild yet at the same time in your face. If you feature more of those types of car rather than the 'I bought a Subaru RS instead of an WRX because mummy and daddy were being a little bit tight about owning a turbo car' type I'd be slightly tempted to buy the mag again.

To be honest, the idea of interviewing the owners gave me the shits, I stopped reading them after the first couple of cars. I got less info about what had actually been done to the cars than I get from my 2 year old daughter when I ask her what she did today. Though I did find out what fashion labels are 'trendy'. Ed Hardy...no more.

No wonder I couldn't find out much on what the S2K had done to it from the interview, not until you find the spec sheet do you realise that it's basically just another 'wheels, paint and stereo' car. By all means feature it but for a car like that to make the cover...no wonder I won't be buying this again. This is how so many people see Hot4s.

The typecast is another waste of space. I had no idea of what I was looking at for a while and I still don't see a point to it.

Hot4 candy: I'm no poof and I'd rather not see skanks..., sorry models, draped over the cars, but even Zena could tell me that a massive percentage of your readership love flogging themselves to bit over the pics so they will forever be a part of your mag.

Hot4 Beats: Am I the only reader that can't stand rap/RnB etc. There mustn't be any other genres that your readers listen to.

Me and my ride, readers rides, whatever you call it. I've always liked. It's like looking at amateur porn, it makes you think anyone can do it.

Don't get me wrong I have the utmost respect for someone that can spend all that time and money on their cars as long as they are doing it for themselves, not 'I did this modification to my (insert car here) because other people will think it's cool' type of person.

I understand people change, tastes change and even your demographic changes but are you guys 100% happy at the end of each issue, not wanting to change anything or wondering, maybe we shouldnt have featured that car that has had more money than sense poured into it etc. etc.

If you got through it all, sorry for my massive rant.

I know that people have different tastes to mine and I don't expect anyone or anything to change. I just thought I'd let Hot4s in on why some people may be turning away from the magazine.

Cheers, Matt

Dude look what ur saying - u dont even buy the mag?!

To be honest though its pretty wacked-out right about now. that zena shemale looks like a man and the quality of cars have dropped. i dont mind the music and fashion but im sure theres an explanation to some of the screwed up shit in there. i heard from a couple of cover car owners that they are trying to fix up the mess left by previous editors because the magazine wasnt selling too well. and to be honest i dont want hot4s to go under just because nobody is buying it because i buy it every month no matter what!

and your there saying you have only bought 3 copies since 119?!?! of course theyll change the mag! when nobody buys a product they have to take it off the shelves and figure out why nobody is buying or 200 people will lose their job.

in my honest opinion i think the mag will get better because theres no way theyll continue with shit cars and girls (they do read the forums and get feedback after all dont they?) and this new format should get a few new people buying the mag because from what ive heard, nobody was buying the mag before and something needed to be done.

I don't buy it anymore because it went to shit. I bought every single issue without fail (like yourself) from 33 to 119. I got sick of wasting my money on a magazine that was filled with dare I say it, 'riced-up' lancer an excels etc.

That is good to hear, to be honest I'd rather not see it go under as well because I like to collect car magazines from all different genres.

I never meant to say that it hasn't changed! I'm saying in my opinion and so many others from what I've heard, the mag keeps changing for the worst.

Thank-you, this is exactly why I voiced my opinion here.

I never post comments on anything
i sit on the sidelines and watch it all happen
but i feel the need to say something here

whats hot4s meant to be exactly?
ive only just started getting into cars and just started reading the mag and a part from the fugly chicks, i think its A-OK

i know its been around for ages and that would prolly explain why a few people are pissed. but like matt, they obviously dont care about it enough to keep buying it.

matt's right about the RICE factor but isnt hot4s about RICE? and not only that but its all about image and all that stuff. looking back at some of the older issues they always had tits and arse and out of all the car mags out there, hot4s is the ONLY one that addresses the social aspect of the culture - well thats what i get from it

i think its also hard to maintain something thats been around for so long. because it has the respect and loyalty built over a long period of time but at the same time it has to constantly stay relavant and get with the "times"

i too have discussed the change in hot4s with some various people. and ive discovered an interesting trend:
the people who DONT like it are the people who actually liked what the previous editors did. the poeple who LIKE it are the people who didnt like what the previous editors did. does that make sense?

its like a whole new market now. and that the main reason why people are cut-up about it. but from what ive gathered, the core existing market was slowly AND surely dying out. and one by one as the years progressed i guess the numbers went down.

people are into different things now and it really isnt the same anymore. a lot of us have grown out of cars as well and it doesnt help that the world is so fucked up that nobody can afford to buy mods!

all i know is that i dont want to be a bitter old guy that rants on about how it USED to be. i consider myself socially aware and intune with trends and shit. call me gay but fuck it it gets the chicks and thats all that matters.

it also looks like theyve put a lot of work into it all. the new website the model comps the new logos and layouts and free stuff and competitions and parties and bbqs - when was the last time hot4s was this involved? i want free stuff who doesnt? i want to go to parties and perve on chicks in bikinis who doesnt?

in my opinion hot4s fell off the face of the earth and now it feels like theyre back. the feeling feels like theyre back in the scene like it was when i was growing up as a teenager and i couldnt wait to drive and cruise and do everything.

all im saying is, is that you really cant please everyone - but i think this time around they are more aware of who they have to please in today's world.

my 2 cents

You made plenty of good points and I feel like I'm becoming 'the bitter old guy'. I'm only 25 for fuck sake. Tongue

It's true, you can't please everyone. We all have different tastes and now that I have read the new Hot4s I don't feel as in tune with the next gen modders as I would like to be. (No matter how many of these Smileys I try to use Wink )

hehe im 28 how do you think i feel?! haha
well i have younger brothers and sisters and without them i honestly would have no idea. even now a lot of the stuff they like just does my head in.
i still think the guys can improve the mag a lot more and if you guys are reading this than mark our words! (weve been very diplomatic)

cars need to get better, girls need to get better and a few tech and DIYs wouldnt hurt too i suppose. everything else is fine. this is the new generation. i reckon our place is to keep the kids in line should they screw up from time to time Big smile

Couldn't agree with you more.

I know they can only feature cars that people build, and I'm sure it's a reflection of the current scene (to a point), but I have seen plenty of what I would call feature cars just on websites like carsales, uniquecarsales, carpoint etc.

Again I know it doesn't mean that anyone else would agree.

The cover sums up where I see Hot4s at the moment when it says 'Lenno's custom S2K performs'. It's on a stage. It's motionless. The only things I can really say that's "Custom" are the stereo and paint. Though if I reduced myself to a scum sucking low-life and keyed the paint work that too could be considered "custom"

No disrespect to the owner, I appreciate the effort that everyone put into his car, just not cover material in my eyes.

You'd think that it would have been read by now?

Hi guys,
Rest assured we are reading all this, AND taking it all in. Feedback is the only way we are going to get the mag how people like it. We're just not commenting because we don't want to taint the waters, so to speak. We could argue points, or say we agree with everything til the cows come home, but in the end it might change what you guys tell us, and we want the truth!
Thanks for all the feedback so far, and keep it coming.
The one thing I'll say in response is I reckon you guys will be pleased with the issues still to come.
Ta.

That's good to hear mate. If that's the case I may have to rename this thread if I buy another issue, or you can just read it as that I won't buy issue 180 again. Tongue
