2010 SHOW GUIDE!
Events have sprung up nationwide to cater to you, the Hot4s reader, for showing your car off to appreciating spectators and fellow enthusiasts. Read on for the following dates and places for the events you must be at.
POWERCRUISE
Launceston, Perth, Taupo, all year long
An awesome event run by a man named Gup, Powercruise is like your usual car cruise, but on steroids, with the volume cranked to 11, and spanning at least three days. Attracting the toughest street cars, Powercruise grants its entrants a stunning 12 hours of cruise time on a race track. That means you’ll cruise with other awesome cars, free to pull some power skids and even try to race your mates on the short straights.
With drift, dyno, sound off and show ’n’ shine competitions, there’s something for everyone. There’s even Miss Powercruise competition for the local ladies, so keep an eye out for the hot contestants.
AUTOSALON
24th-25th July Perth, 7th-8th August Adelaide, 28th-29th August Melbourne, 18th-19th September Gold Coast, 20th-21st November, Sydney
After taking a year’s hiatus, AutoSalon is back and bigger than ever. Make no mistake, the who’s who of the scene will be there. The new management is taking no chances with the epic event, so all they have done is enhanced and properly organised the shows this time around. Held five rounds in five major states, the Final Battle will be in Sydney, and only one will be crowned King of AutoSalon. With the amount of quality cars all built up in 2009 and no awards to win, expect all of them to be on display.
ALL JAPAN DAY
South Australia and New South Wales TBC
As its name implies, it’s a gathering of Japanese imports nation-wide, but with a difference. The organisers have pared their aims down to the simplest form of shows ever; that is to meet other car enthusiasts and check each others’ rides out. With Nippon cars spanning from old school rides to modern classics, and modified examples ranging from mild to wild, there’s something for everyone.
Most importantly, you get to chit chat with its owners and make merry with fellow hobbyists. It’s for a good cause too, with the donations and display fees going straight to charity. Rock up and have a chat!
MOTOREX
Sydney 24th and 25th July Olympic Park Sydney
The best of the best for over-the-top show rides. Think of this as the Olympics of show cars; only the most awesome have a shot at competing for the coveted trophies handed out by MotorActive, Meguiar’s, and House of Kolor judges.
In 2009, an RX-7 travelled over land and sea to be unveiled at Sydney Olympic Stadium, and that was a princely blinged out Mazda that raised collective wows. However, MotorEx 2009 belonged to Danny Malkessi of Custom Bodyworks; his WRX saw off the foreign contender and won the Best Hi-Tech award. With all entrants bringing such high levels of game, MotorEx is the place to be if you want to see the scene’s crème de la crème.
EXTREME HORSEPOWER
South Australia 30th and 31st October
Having resounding successes in 2008 and 2009, Extreme Horsepower is back, and each time they have prepared a very long list of trophies to give away. A majority of the awards can be contested by cars across all categories, so there’s a big chance of entrants walking away with armfuls of trophies. Living up to its name, Extreme Horsepower also features dyno competitions for various engine size and configuration categories, so those with the go to back up their show can have a crack at being a dyno queen. And oh yes, there will be a bikini contest as well.
JAMBOREE
Willowbank Queensland August 21 & 22
One of the biggest events for all cars with less than eight cylinders (or none), it draws top drag racers from around Australia to compete for the drag strip crown. If you’re not into watching cars blasting down a straight road over and over again, there is also a huge variety of cars on display; sans your Falcadores, of course. With a massive dedicated Show ‘n’ Shine program, complete with the Jamboree Babe contest, it’s definitely the place to be in sunny Queensland in August. If you’re into five minutes of burnouts followed by six seconds of fun, well that’s catered for too.
